Hambley-Wallace HouseThis substantial French style country home was erected in 1901-1903 by E.B.C. Hambley, an English mining engineer who came to Rowan County to manage the Whitney project on the Yadkin River. The home has 20 rooms finished in various woods and tiles. The exterior is of Rowan granite and pumpkin colored brick.Set apart by its scale and large lot, this mansion is among the most ambitious of its era in the Piedmont area of North Carolina. The house was designed by Charlotte Charles C. Cook and erected by the Lazenby Brothers Construction Company. The layout of the driveways, walks and the design of the grounds was completed by Thomas Meehan and Sons, Inc. of Philadelphia in 1904. Hambley died at age 44 in a 1906 typhoid epidemic. The house was home to the builder and his family from 1903 until 1917 when it passed into the Norwood family. In 1927 the property was acquired by Leo C. Wallace, Sr. and his wife, Ella Belle Wallace. Their son, Leo Wallace, Jr. and his wife, Virginia Wallace have continued to reside in the home until the present. All total it has been home to the Wallace family for eighty-one years. The house survives today in a truly remarkable high state of preservation which reflects the stewardship of the Wallace family. |
